Gliding through a snowy forest behind a team of excited huskies — or a calm reindeer — is one of winter’s most memorable experiences, and requires no previous skill.

Husky safaris

  • Most tours let you drive your own sled in pairs: one drives, one sits.
  • The guide explains the brake and how to lean in turns; dogs follow the lead sled.
  • Tours range from 1–2 hours to multi-day expeditions with cabin nights.

Reindeer sleigh rides

Slower and calmer — perfect for small children and those who prefer to relax. Often combined with a visit to a reindeer farm and Sámi culture.

Where to go

Finnish Lapland (Levi, Ruka), Swedish and Norwegian Lapland, the Alps (some resorts), Canada and Alaska.

What to wear

It gets very cold sitting on a sled. Most operators provide thermal overalls, boots and mittens. Wear warm base layers underneath and cover your face (balaclava tips).

Choosing an ethical operator

  • Look for small teams, happy and well-fed dogs, and good kennels.
  • Ask about dog retirement and rest days.
  • Read recent reviews that mention animal welfare.
