Heli-skiing uses a helicopter instead of lifts to reach untouched powder slopes. It is a bucket-list experience — but not for beginners.

How it works

  • Small groups (typically 4–5 guests) fly with a certified mountain guide.
  • Days range from a single drop to multi-day packages with lodges.
  • All guests receive avalanche safety training and equipment (beacon, probe, shovel, often an airbag).

What level do you need?

You should ski or ride confidently on black runs and in varied off-piste snow, with good fitness. Many operators offer “intro” packages on gentler terrain for strong intermediates.

Where to go

Canada (British Columbia) is the heli-skiing capital; also Alaska, Georgia (Gudauri), Iceland, Sweden, India and Italy. It is banned or restricted in France and limited in Switzerland and Austria.

Cost

From a few hundred euros for a single drop in Georgia to many thousands for a week in Canada.
